East Texas Pin-A-Sister conducts community outreach and education of minority health programs

The East Texas Pin-A-Sister group was formed in 2010 after results of the Tyler Affiliate of Susan G. Komen’s community needs assessment indicated a decrease in screening mammograms among African American women residing in Smith County. The goal of the program is to encourage women, specifically African American women, to receive screening mammograms.

Objectives:

To increase awareness of screening mammogram guidelines
To reinforce the importance of early detection
To introduce the UT Health East Texas HOPE Breast Center’s genetic testing program...

Evelyn Joseph is the director of Pharmacy at UT Health Carthage and UT Health Henderson. She is a member of the Ardent and the UT Health East Texas Diversity and Inclusion Council.

UT Health East Texas will launch COVID-19 vaccine appointments by phone beginning Tuesday, March 16. Those who need help navigating online sign-up or who are without access to internet can now call 903-747-4VAC (4822) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to get an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Those who have internet access do not need to call in and should continue to sign up directly at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/ut. New appointments will continue to open at this link as we receive more...

When Melissa Maeker, director of pharmacy for UT Health North Campus Tyler, saw the weather forecast late last week, she went into planning mode. As with previous ice storms, she planned to stay at the pharmacy for a few nights so she could still work and wouldn’t have to risk being on dangerous, icy roadways.

But this time, there was a new element added to her preparations – making sure power remained for the precious COVID-19 vaccine being kept in an ultracold freezer at the pharmacy.

Due to continuing inclement weather and poor road conditions, all UT Health East Texas Physicians clinics will be closed for the remainder of the week. This includes the COVID-19 vaccine clinic at UT Health North Campus Tyler.

Providers will be available for telehealth appointments, which can be scheduled online at UTHealthEastTexasDoctors.com or by calling 903-596-DOCS (3627). UT Health East Texas hosted a ribbon-cutting Wednesday for its new urgent care in Canton, 301 E. State Hwy. 243 in the Trader’s Square shopping plaza. Formerly known as “Canton Express Med,” the clinic re-opened as UT Health East Texas Urgent Care earlier this month. The hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

Woman recovers from COVID-19 at UT Health Pittsburg

Sibyl Vickers has survived a lot in her 99 years. She lived through the Great Depression, lost her eyesight 30 years ago and struggles with hearing loss. And now, she counts herself among COVID-19 survivors.
