During the postpartum period, patients will be transferred to our Women’s & Children’s Unit on the sixth floor. About the Family Birthplace
The Family Birthplace at UT Health Tyler is on the fourth floor of our Tyler hospital’s north wing. We are proud to be a trusted leader in East Texas for maternity and newborn care, offering NICU services for babies born at any gestation period.
We are a Level II state-designated maternal facility with the Blue Cross Blue Shield maternity distinction. Our goal is to make your labor and delivery as smooth and comfortable as possible. We have experienced nurses that are trained and certified in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, advanced fetal monitoring and neonatal resuscitation.

In the postpartum period, patients are transferred to our Women’s & Children’s unit on the sixth floor to be cared for by our postpartum staff. We offer variety of pain management and labor and delivery services to ensure a safe and comfortable pregnancy and childbirth journey.

Free childbirth classes with Birthly
We offer free childbirth classes through Birthly, which utilize an evidence-based curriculum taught by certified and experienced educators. Each class provides dedicated time for Q&A and is offered at convenient times to suit your schedule. These easy-to-access small group sessions will help you feel prepared for the birth of your baby.
Our classes include:
- Early pregnancy preparations (1.5 hours)
- Prenatal bootcamp (2 -2.5 hours)
- Coping and comfort (90 minutes)
- Perinatal mental health
- Pre/postnatal movement and mindfulness
- Breastfeeding 101 (2 hours)
- Newborn care (2 hours)

Women’s & Children’s Unit
The Women’s & Children’s Unit at UT Health Tyler is located on the sixth floor and is dedicated to providing specialized care for women and children throughout East Texas. The unit is staffed by specially trained nurses with expertise in postpartum and standard newborn care, women’s surgical services and pediatrics.
Designed with comfort and family support in mind, the unit features spacious patient rooms with accommodations for overnight family stays, comfortable glider rockers and a separate procedure room tailored to meet the unique needs of our smallest patients.
Lactation Services
UT Health Tyler offers lactation services to all mothers during their inpatient hospital stay. We also provide appointments for outpatient lactation visits. The lactation consultants offer a line where mothers can call and leave a message; calls are typically returned within one business day.
Our lactation consultants specialize in assisting mothers with:
- Breastfeeding and latch support
- Milk supply concerns
- Pumping and breast pump education
- Engorgement and nipple pain
- Returning to work while breastfeeding
- Feeding schedules and newborn nutrition
- Breastfeeding multiples or premature infants
- General breastfeeding education and support

Our NICU
In the event your baby is born prematurely or needs special care, the UT Health Tyler NICU is here for you and your baby. In our NICU, skilled medical and nursing staff care for infants of all gestational ages.
Our board-certified neonatologists lead a specialized team of nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, social workers and other caregivers in providing the best care available for your baby. We also have a transport team in the event a baby is born at an outlying facility and needs a higher level of care.
