Arthritis treatment

Arthritis is broadly defined as the inflammation of joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age. While there are many different types of arthritis, the two most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Osteoarthritis:
    • Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage, or cushion, between your joints wears away over time. While osteoarthritis can affect almost any joint, it is most commonly found in the hands, knees, hips, lower back and neck.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis:
    • Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes the lining of your joints to swell. This can cause joint pain among other symptoms, and if left untreated can result in bone erosion and joint deformity.

Arthritis treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and improving the functionality of the joints. Treatment can include one or a combination of medications, joint injections, physical therapy, and surgery. Orthopedic rehabilitation

At UT Health East Texas, we understand that recovery doesn’t end with surgery. Our rehabilitation program is a crucial part of our comprehensive care approach, designed to ensure patients achieve the best possible outcomes following orthopedic procedures.

In partnership with Choice Health At Home, our skilled physical therapists and rehabilitation specialists work closely with each patient to create a personalized recovery plan. This plan may include a range of therapies aimed at restoring mobility, strength, and functionality, whether you’re recovering from joint replacement surgery, sports injuries, or arthroscopic procedures.

We focus on pain management, flexibility exercises, strength training, and education on preventive measures to avoid future injuries. Our goal is to help patients regain their independence and return to their daily activities as quickly and safely as possible.

Osteoporosis treatment

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the mesh-like structure inside the bone becomes more brittle. The bone structure may be thin if either too much bone tissue has been lost or if not enough bone tissue is made. When the internal strands of the bone become too thin, the bones become weak and can fracture or break easily.

Treatment for osteoporosis involves both lifestyle modification, and in certain cases, medication therapy. UT Health East Texas uses the most current guidelines to structure a treatment program that provides the best results based on your individualized needs. We work with you to adapt and alter treatments based on any side effects or cost issues.

Pain management services

Our orthopedics team works closely with patients to determine the best care plan to help treat your condition and minimize pain. We offer pain-reducing treatments, such as:

  • Joint injections
  • Medications
  • Physical therapy

For chronic pain or pain not related to orthopedic injury, UT Health East Texas offers general pain management services.

Scoliosis treatment

Curvature of the spine, or scoliosis, is a problem that usually develops in adolescence and more often in girls. At a sensitive age, scoliosis can affect a young person’s appearance, posture, gait and self-image. In most cases it can be treated by close supervision and bracing. However, when those methods fail, surgery is the recommended option.

What is precision scoliosis surgery?

UT Health Tyler leverages the state-of-the-art Mazor Robotics Renaissance Guidance System for precision scoliosis surgery. This advanced medical equipment, in the hands of a trained physician, helps correct the health-threatening condition of scoliosis before it can twist and cripple the life of a young person.

Using the system’s software, surgeons create 3-D images of the patient’s curved spine, compare it with an ideal straightened spine image and map out a detailed plan to bring the patient’s anatomy into alignment. The robotic system then guides the surgeon’s precise placement of each pin and rod. Every patient has a customized surgery designed for that patient alone.

There are many benefits of the Mazor system, including reduced time of surgery, greater accuracy and precision for surgeons, improved surgical outcomes, fewer complications (such as infections and the need for revisions), and reduced radiation exposure during the procedure.

Own the Bone program

The American Orthopedic Association’s Own the Bone® program is a program that works closely with patients who’ve experienced a fragility fracture due to osteoporosis to prevent future fractures and improve bone health. The program not only focuses on preventing osteoporosis, but also helps patients after an osteoporosis diagnosis and through the post-fracture care process.

For questions about the Own the Bone program at UT Health, please call 903-596-3844.
