UT Health Henderson nurses serve on front lines in COVID-19 hotspot New Jersey

Four nurses from UT Health Henderson returned to work this week after spending two weeks helping at a New Jersey hospital during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak there.

All four tested negative for COVID-19 upon returning and were quarantined for a week as an added precaution. On Wednesday, they walked back into the hospital they left almost a month ago to help in one of the hardest hit hotspots in the country.

Rodney Davis’ bout with COVID-19 was so bad that he wants to make sure he can do anything he can to help others suffering from the virus.

John Vaughn is back on the police force 15 years after suffering a heart attack on duty that forced him into early retirement.

COVID-19 patients share stories of recovery at UT Health Tyler

Roy Anderson and Vivian Schumer arrived at UT Health Tyler within 24 hours of one another, both gravely ill from COVID-19. They both spent weeks on a ventilator and were celebrated with viral videos of hospital staff cheering as they “graduated” from ICU and were wheeled to a different unit. On Friday, both were discharged from the hospital where they spent almost a month.

Tyler, Texas (April 3, 2020) — During this COVID-19 pandemic, UT Health East Texas is quickly changing the way we deliver care to support social distancing where possible. One local family found a way to stay connected while their daughter was treated at UT Health Tyler.

While his 2-year-old daughter was being treated at the hospital, Ben would stand outside the front of the hospital and talk to her while she waved down from the window above.

The hospital is limiting visitors due to COVID-19, and pediatric patients are allowed to have one family member stay with them. Mom Christy decided to stay at the hospital, so Ben returned home to care for the couple’s two sons.
