Joseph B. Coopwood, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon who practices at UT Health East Texas Physicians Jacksonville. As a general surgeon in Operation Enduring Freedom, Dr. Coopwood, followed in the footsteps of his grandfather (World War II) and father (Vietnam War) by becoming a surgeon in the Air Force. “Being a surgeon is what I’ve wanted to do since I was about 8 years old, and I’ve always thought highly of the military, so it was a good fit.”
Dr. Coopwood enjoys community medicine, where the bonds between doctor and patient tend to be stronger than in large urban areas. “I try to treat people like they’re the only patient I have by giving them 100 percent of my time and effort.”
Dr. Coopwood performs a variety of surgical procedures including colon cancer screening, treatment of hernias, treatment and/or removal of gallbladder and more. He is also medical director at the UT Health Jacksonville Wound Care Center, which is the only program in Cherokee county equipped to solve a wide variety of wound issues.
