Henderson, Texas (June 26, 2024) – UT Health Henderson is now offering an acute withdrawal management program, which is an inpatient, hospital-based three- to five-day medical detox available to adults requiring medical management of withdrawal symptoms from alcohol and/or opioids.
“Across the nation, addiction/substance use disorder impacts millions of people and their families. The good news is there is hope — addiction can be successfully treated,” said UT Health Henderson CEO Mark Leitner. “UT Health Henderson is dedicated to helping people across East Texas deal with issues that impact their health and wellness. This new service is just one more avenue where we can provide assistance.”
This is the only such program in the region, offering around-the-clock medical care provided by the hospital’s physicians and nurses. This clinical team monitors each patient, while using protocol-specific medications in order to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms to decrease the dangers of withdrawal throughout this first step of the individual’s treatment process.
The withdrawal outreach coordinator continues discussions with the patient throughout the inpatient stay to develop an individualized discharge plan that includes appropriate referrals to the next level of care.
“We work with patients to find a community-based addiction treatment facility that meets their needs after discharge,” said Peggy Riggs, the program’s outreach coordinator. “Our goal is to help patients start their journey to sobriety and prepare them for the next step in their recovery.”
The acute withdrawal management program is available to patients 18 and older who are covered by Medicaid, Medicare or a private insurance plan.
